Every Mother Counts- I believe SO!

Every Mother Counts is a woman-founded maternal health non-profit organization that links mothers to providers of essential care to address major barriers to maternal health in the U.S. and abroad.

A few incredible statistics:

-The U.S. ranks 60th in the world in terms of maternal health

-2 women die every day in the U.S. from complications from childbirth and pregnancy

-Worldwide, 1 woman dies every 2 minutes from complications from childbirth and pregnancy

-The U.S. is one of 13 countries with a rising maternal mortality rate, alongside The Bahamas, North Korea and Zimbabwe.

The Partnership:
* Participants in Zooma Annapolis (either in person or virtually) can sign up to raise money for EMC as part of their training.

Run ZOOMA through historic and scenic Annapolis on June 3, then celebrate at Navy Stadium.
Half Marathon, 10K and 5K events start and finish at Navy Stadium at 7am.
New in 2017, Virtual Zooma Annapolis, for those of you who can’t attend in person, but would like to be a part of the 10th anniversary celebration!

I am running the virtual option this year!  I am so EXCITED that this is an option and I can still take part in this fun event!  ZOOMA  also announced a couple other locations and dates:

 Cape Cod– 10K & half- October 7

 Florida– 5K, 12K, & half- October 21

 Texas– 5K, 10K & half-  March 10, 2018

I have run in all 3 locations and they are absolutely beautiful runs!  Finally, remember to use code MARYBETH2017  when you register for 10% off any race and distance.

Please consider Every Mother Counts this year when you are making contributions.  Many of us are moms, sisters, aunts and grandmothers and truly believe that every mother does count.  Essential care for the mother to be is so critical and every contribution can make a difference.  Click here to give!  Thank you!

Wow 60th in the world? That’s disappointing. Every mother sure does count. What a great cause. I’ll have to investigate the virtual option.

Wow, it’s a shame that our great country has such a high maternal mortality rate. And I can’t imagine that it’s going to get any better in the near future. That is so wrong and sad. I’m glad to hear about this organization and the work that they do.

I cannot believe that this country is 60th in the world – that’s so embarassing and dissappointing! I’ve heard about this awesome organization in the past and I will definitely check out the virtual option.

  6. Every Mother Counts sounds like a fantastic organization. I didn’t realize maternal health was such a serious issue in this country. ZOOMA has some great races, unfortunately I won’t be able to make it this year!

I don’t even want to get into how disheartening this stats are. I applaud you for supporting this organization and thank you for shedding light on it for some of us who didn’t know a whole lot about it. I’ll have to do more research and see how I can help. <3

Great cause, as a former midwife I really care about reducing maternal mortality both here and abroad. Access to good prenatal care in the US can be spotty, and I think we all know why that is– no universal health care. A lot of my clients signed on with me because they had no insurance and were worried about costs. I would get them signed up with the WA state program First Steps, and their care would be paid for. First Steps was like the current Medicaid expansion to Obamacare, families with income up to 200% of poverty level were covered. As a country the least we can do for mothers and babies is to provide good prenatal care! And there’s so much to do internationally, women and babies who die in childbirth for lack of access to the things we take for granted in this country. Pathfinder International is another good charity for maternal health, one that I support.

I think it is a great platform too Wendy. I think we still have a huge population of under insured and not healthy americans but it is alarming to see the number in print.

  13. Incredible statistics! I wonder who comes in first place for maternal health. This is definitely a great cause – thanks for sharing the info, I had no idea.
